Illegal Immigrants in Baltimore afraid of calling 9-1-1 are sharing their concerns with the Baltimore City police commissioner today, in assistance with the nonprofit organization BUILD.
The organization collected cards from illegal immigrants at a meeting Sunday — one commissioner Kevin Davis was not able to attend. The cards will be delivered to Davis today.
Some immigrants worry if they call 9-1-1 for an emergency, the police may call Immigration and Customs Enforcement and have them deported.
“We cannot allow the City to be balkanized by the violence,” BUILD said in a statement Monday. “We must stand together to address the violence in every community.”
The commissioner has said in the past he won’t have his officers act as immigrant agents
According to BUILD’s Facebook page, their mission is to “Identify and develop leaders in every community.”
BUILD aims to do this by having people build relationships in face-to-face meetings. They are hoping to reschedule the meeting between Davis and immigrant members of the community.
